THE BROOM

In Italian, the term broom, are different shrubs and evergreen deciduous, very common in our gardens as in the Mediterranean. These plants all belonging to the same family but of a different kind which, however, have in common the flowers of an intense yellow-gold color. The love for the broom yet born at the time of the Greeks and Romans, who cultivated the gardens to beautify and attract bees to get a high quality honey. The broom was also used for the textile industry, was created in fact a fiber clothing that is suitable to produce ropes for ships. In the language of flowers the broom mainly means "humility", but is not appreciated in all places, in Sicily, for example, is a flower "not welcome" because, according to tradition, was rebuked by Jesus in Gethsemane because it made too much noise.
The broom is a plant very lucky, was in fact sung by Giacomo Leopardi in one of his most famous compositions, these are the first lines of the poem:
Qui su l'arida schiena
Del formidabil monte
Sterminator Vesevo,
La qual null'altro allegra arbor né fiore,
Tuoi cespi solitari intorno spargi,
Odorata ginestra,
Contenta dei deserti.

LA GINESTRA

In italiano, con il termine ginestra, si intendono diversi arbusti sia sempreverdi che a foglie caduche, molto diffusi nei nostri giardini come nella macchia mediterranea. Si tratta di piante tutte appartenenti alla stessa famiglia ma di genere diverso che però hanno in comune i fiori di un colore intenso giallo-oro. L'amore per la ginestra nasce ancora al tempo dei greci e dei romani che le coltivavano per abbellire i giardini e attirare le api per ottenere un miele di alta qualità. La ginestra veniva utilizzata anche per il settore tessile, si creava infatti una fibra adatta sia all'abbigliamento che per produrre corde per le navi. Nel linguaggio dei fiori la ginestra significa principalmente "umiltà", eppure non è apprezzato in tutti i posti, in Sicilia per esempio è un fiore "non gradito" perché, secondo la tradizione, venne rimproverato da Gesù nel Getsemani perché faceva troppo rumore.
La ginestra è una pianta molto fortunata, è stata infatti cantata da Giacomo Leopardi in uno dei suoi componimenti più famosi, questi sono i primi versi della poesia:
Qui su l'arida schiena
