Bougainvillea is a genus of plants of the family Nyctaginaceae, native to the tropical areas (especially in Brazil). The plant was discovered in Brazil in 1768 by the French botanist Philibert Commerson and was later named for Louis Antoine de Bougainville, the French explorer who was the head of that expedition. La pianta fu scoperta nel 1768 in Brasile dal botanico francese Philibert Commerson e fu più tardi così nominata in onore di Louis Antoine de Bougainville, l'esploratore francese che era a capo di quella spedizione. L'interesse come piante ornamentali è dato da grappoli di piccoli fiori tubolosi bianchi o giallognoli riuniti a gruppi di tre in un involucro di tre brattee vistosamente colorate di bianco, giallo, arancio, rosa, rosso o viola, che fioriscono per molti mesi l'anno. La bouganville è una pianta rampicante e, conseguentemente, è necessario predisporre supporti ai quali essa possa aggrapparsi durante il suo sviluppo; tali supporti possono essere di vario tipo (graticci, pali, pergolati ecc.).
