THE MASK

The mask is an object that is used to cover the face or just the eyes since prehistoric times the mask was used for religious rites, burial, plays and festivals like Carnival. The origin of the word is moltoantica and is not certain, it may derive from the word "masca" that black ghost, or it may derive from the word medieval "màsca" that witch: it is likely that both hypotheses are true. In ancient times, the mask was considered an important means of communication between God and man that made ​​it possible to break away from conventions. The mask was used because it is from the period Egyptian funeral, but none have been found in several tombs of the Hellenistic period: the most popular is undoubtedly the death mask of Agamemnon. In theater masks were usatissime, just remember the Art Theatre with the most famous masks of Harlequin, Columbine, Punch and many others. A curiosity: in Venice in the Middle Ages, during the plague, doctors wore a mask with the spices in the nose made ​​it more difficult to infection. Venetian masks, currently the world's most famous, are manufactured mainly in paper mache and painted all by hand: a real local crafts.

La maschera è un oggetto che serve per coprire il viso oppure solo gli occhi: fin dalla preistoria la maschera è stata usata per riti religiosi, funerari, rappresentazioni teatrali e per feste popolari proprio come il Carnevale. L'origine della parola è moltoantica e non è certa, potrebbe derivare dalla parola "masca" cioè fantasma nero, oppure potrebbe derivare dalla parola medievale "màsca" cioè strega: è probabile che entrambe le ipotesi siano vere. Nelle epoche antiche la maschera era considerata un importante mezzo di comunicazione tra la divinità e l'uomo perché permetteva di distaccarsi dalle convenzioni. La maschera è stata usata a motivo funerario sia dal periodo egizio, ma ne sono state trovate diverse anche in tombe di periodo ellenico: la più famosa è senza dubbio la maschera funeraria di Agamennone. Nel teatro le maschere sono state usatissime, basti ricordare il Teatro dell'Arte con le maschere più famose di Arlecchino, Colombina, Pulcinella e tanti altri. Una curiosità: a Venezia, nel Medioevo, durante le pestilenze, i medici indossavano una maschera con delle spezie nel naso: rendeva infatti più difficile il contagio. Le maschere veneziane, attualmente le più famose del mondo, sono fabbricate soprattutto in cartapesta e dipinte tutte a mano: un vero artigianato locale.
