The Tulip

The tulip is a flower that comes from Turkey, where it grows spontaneously and cultivation began about 1000 years ago. The word tulip comes from the greek turban (turban =), because its shape reminds precisely a turban. As always, all the gardens of the East are full of tulips and in Istanbul in April is the feast of the tulip.
A Turkish legend traces the origin of the flower with drops of blood shed for love of a young lover disappointed. The tulip in the East means perfect love.
In the West, the tulip bulbs arrived around 1550, thanks to the Austrian Ambassador in Constantinople, which he brought back from Turkey a substantial amount in Vienna, where, however, were unable to cultivate them. The European country where the tulips were more successful was undoubtedly the Netherlands: in 1600, in fact, tulips became sought after and this led to their skyrocketing price, so much so that in 1637 the Dutch government had to pass a law that it regulated the price. The tulip is so famous in the Netherlands often the inhabitants of the country are called tulips.
In the West, the meaning of the tulip, in the language of flowers, is inconstancy.

Il Tulipano

Il tulipano è un fiore che proviene dalla Turchia, dove cresce in modo spontaneo e la coltivazione è iniziata circa 1000 anni fa. Il termine tulipano deriva dal greco turban (= turbante), perché la sua forma della corolla ricorda proprio quella di un turbante. Da sempre, tutti i giardini d'Oriente sono pieni di tulipani ed in Aprile a Instanbul si celebra la festa del tulipano.
Una leggenda turca fa risalire l'origine del fiore alle gocce di sangue versate per amore da un giovane innamorato deluso. Il tulipano nel mondo orientale significa amore perfetto.
In Occidente i bulbi del tulipano giunsero intorno al 1550, grazie all'ambasciatore austriaco a Costantinopoli, che di ritorno dalla Turchia ne portò una quantità consistente a Vienna, dove però non seppero coltivarli. Il paese europeo dove i tulipani hanno avuto più successo è stato senza dubbio l'Olanda: dal 1600, infatti, i tulipani divennero ricercatissimi e questo portò il loro prezzo alle stelle, tant'è che nel 1637 il governo olandese dovette approvare una legge che ne regolava il prezzo. Il tulipano è talmente famoso in Olanda che spesso gli stessi abitanti del paese vengono definiti tulipani.
In Occidente il significato del tulipano, nel linguaggio dei fiori, è quello dell'incostanza.
